Follow Krikellopotamos’ crystal-clear waters amidst a verdant landscape. This route of remarkable beauty will take you all the way to the ravine of Panta-Vrechei [Always raining]. This well-known ravine owes its name to the impressive waterfalls which form ponds ideal for swimming; for those interested, the surrounding rocks are amazing natural climbing tracks.

Discover local culinary treasures

Taste Evrytania country sausages with or without leek, local pies and river trout in nearby tavernas. Try the top-quality organic prosciutto made of a black indigenous breed of swine, a delicacy which was known as ‘akrokolion’ in antiquity; today it is produced at Prouso village. The product was awarded the second prize in the international gastronomic competition in Sicily, and the plant where it is produced is one of the local sights. If you are a cheese-lover, make sure you taste feta cheese as well as tsalafouti, a local cheese. Tsipouro spirit or mouro (a type of local drink resembling tsipouro) will be a fine accompaniment to your meal. Trachanas, mountain tea and fragrant honey from fir forests in the area are products you should definitely add to your buys before leaving.

Zagori, Vikos Gorge

The Vikos gorge begins 600m after Monodendri village (in Western Zagori, west of Timfi mountain) and constitutes a true natural monument. Its overall length exceeds 30km (Tselepovo-Kleidonia) and depth varies.  In its deeper part the gorge reaches approximately 2.200m width.

Due to its geological isolation and the absence of human presence, Vikos gorge includes rare plant and flower species of Epirus.

The best period to visit the gorge is during summer and in the beginning of fall when the river is shallow. This fact makes passages easier to cross. If you have a stable pace you can cross the gorge in approximately 7 hours. It might sound very long but the scenery with its beauties will definitely reward you.

A taste of local gastronomy

You’ll realize how important food is for Metsovo at a first glance, or may we say at a “first smell”!!! The tavernas in the village’s square are set early on, with their spits roasting all sorts of meats. Enjoy ‘epic’ feasts; kontosouvli in parchment paper, delicious sausages and “loads” of pies! This is where you’ll find stores selling the region’s dairy products, of which metsovone and metsovela cheeses stand out. Metsovone is a smoked cheese. Its taste is rich, slightly salty and spicy and is served as an appetizer or with a glass of local Vlachiko or Debina wine.
