Village of Elliniko – Papagianni Museum

by Hello From Greece

North of Tzoumerka lies the village of Elliniko, which belongs to the municipality of Pramanta.

At an altitude of 750 meters you come across one of the most beautiful villages in Tzoumerka, well maintained, with its cafes, its cobbled streets, and the old school which is now a museum and which dominates the center of the village.

The works exhibited here are by the sculptor Theodoros Papagiannis and are connected to Epirus and its history. The traditional life of the area, every aspect of it, the people who have lived here, they are everywhere, inside the museum, out in the open – in the old school yard – but also in the restaurants and cafes of the area; the old inhabitants of Elliniko still “live” through their photos, which you see in small frames. Inside the museum are other portraits of famous people in the region, as well as those of many ordinary people. Medals and coins created over a period of approximately 40 years are displayed in the corridor’s display cases. The old classroom with students, with the old desks and the teacher is a special theme. Among the works are many that are made from leftovers found on the Polytechnic School’s yard in combination with other recyclable materials. Even objects found discarded or neglected in paddocks, farms and other places have been used.

Many of the artist’s works are exhibited in other parts of the region on mountain slopes, near monasteries, in glades and you can stop and admire them.

Each year, the museum hosts the annual Sculpture Symposium as well as various other cultural events, such as concerts, guided tours, conferences and workshops.

The old school, which was turned into a museum, is a stone building from the 30s, built by artisans from the Epirus area with a donation from the benefactor Nikolaos Mandelopoulos, who lived in Ellinikon.
