Route from the city center to your Sheikh Forest

by Hello From Greece

Walking route from Kamara to Kedrinos hill? Why not; It takes just one hour to come and go to one of the most beautiful itinerary in the city to do your fitness.

I ascend to the beautiful Castles, -what is left of the old fortification of the city of Thessaloniki. I first meet the cemeteries of Evangelistria, at the junction of Eleni Zografou and Agiou Dimitriou streets and stop for a moment to listen to the mournful atmosphere of the family tombs of the old Thessalonians. It is the oldest of the rescued cemeteries in the city. The Municipality of Thessaloniki has characterized it as a “protected monument”. Its history begins in the late 19th century and goes back to the 70s, when it was no longer when no other burial took place, due to the saturation of the soil and the narrowness of the space. An exception was made in 1982 as a tribute to the mayor of the city, Michalis Papadopoulos who was the first elected mayor of the city after the fall of the Dictatorship.

I continue to the General Hospital “Agios Dimitrios”, whose main building and the surrounding area are designated by the competent Ministry as protected. The building of the Hospital belongs to the newest monuments of Thessaloniki. There is various information about the possible date of its construction, however, it has not been ascertained yet whether any of them are valid. Its architect is not known either, but it is probable, due to the great similarity with the morphological elements of the DG Army Corps, that he is V. Poselli. At the beginning of the century, together with the “Hirs” Hospital, they were the largest hospitals in the city.

I pass in front of the Gardens of Pasha. The lush park with the mystical atmosphere carries dozens of urban myths. Some architectural works look like works of the great Gaudi. Various metaphysical stories are told about the Pasha Gardens, including dragons, monsters, fairies, and supernatural beings.

A little higher and I find myself crossing “NO” Avenue. In my right hand dominates the majestic Church of St. Paul, dedicated to the Apostle of the Nations. It was built in the late 1970s and completely renovated in 2013.

After the cafeteria “Kedrinos Lofos” at the end of the street before it transforms into a snake, I stand in front of a small church whose light is dim. On the right corner of the street. It is dedicated to Agia Paraskevi. At the end of the uphill route in front of me is the Zoo, and on my left the Forest Theater.

Time to return. I descend from the right side of the road to watch out for the cars but at the first opportunity I pass across to admire the beautiful Thessaloniki from above.

Before crossing Egnatia, returning to the city center, I stop again in front of Kamara and with my look I reach from one to Ano Poli which is not well hidden behind the Rotonda and from the other to Thermaikos gulf.
